Scarf Plus Coat Equals Style

On The Marilyn Denis Show, Stylist Janice Meredith gives us a lesson in styling scarves. From what to pair with different necklines to jacket fabrics, Janice points out some simple style tips to make sure you’ve got the warmth without the bulk. This year it’s all about bold textures and patterns instead of that clean slate look that has been happening with pashminas in the last few years.

Cozy Capes

With a nice clean drape you want to keep the volume of the scarf on top of the coat and use it to add in some colour. Avoid covering up too much of the cape coat with a long scarf and don’t tuck it in or you will look like a quarterback with shoulder pads.

Half Zip Wool Coats

Feel free to add a lot of volume around the neckline to cover up the bare area. With the open space in the neckline you won’t over heat.

Classic Down-Filled Puffer Coat

When wearing a belted coat keep the scarf on top and volume around neckline. This jacket provides a great opportunity to wear a textured scarf with colour and pattern. Plus, the accordion folds are essentially fool-proof fashion. Then, tie the belt to the side instead of mid-centre to offset it from the scarf.

Straight Coat

Tartans and plaids are one of the top “it” looks for the season. The muted colours in the coat pair well with bright colour and pattern to add interest. With a heavier coat pick a lighter scarf to avoid over-heating.

Transitional Coat

Lighter jackets, like this one with shearling, look great with and interesting warm scarf to help add warmth. Wear it long to elongate the frame and cinch the waist with a belt for a curvy silhouette.

Statement Coats

Right now these are the most popular shape and style. With a shawl collar like this you want to leave your scarf hanging loose (don’t knot it) so that you don’t add any more volume.
